지난 주에 미술애호가 이충렬 선생의 출판기념회가 효자동에서 있었다.
퇴근 후 가느라고 본 행사에는 참석하지 못했고, 2차 뒷풀이에 참석했다.
이 자리에는 평소 이 선생과 교류했던 다양한 분야의 인사들이 대거 참석했는데,
참석 인원은 30여 명, 성향은 대개 진보 쪽이었던 것 같다.
순서 없이, 기억나는대로 이날 참석자들의 면면을 더듬어보면,
김선주(한겨레 논설주간), 고재열(<시사인> 기자), 정연주(전 KBS 사장), 조선희(한국영상자료원장), 박재동(화백), 고은광순(한의사), 이유명호(한의사), 유지나(교수, 영화평론가), 정재권(한겨레 기자), 김원(건축가), 류연복(판화가), 가수 정태춘-박은옥 부부, 이원복(국립중앙박물관 학예연구실장), 곽대원(전 만화평론가협회장), 김주섭(공연제작자) 등등...
나는 처음에는 입구 쪽에 앉았다가 나중엔 안쪽 끝자리 정 사장 맞은편으로 옮겼는데,
내 옆에는 고재열 기자, 다시 그 옆으로 박재동 화백이 앉아 있었다.
대충 식사가 끝나 몇 사람은 먼저 일어서기도 하고 이래저래 조금 어수선한 분위기였는데,
박재동 화백이 가방에서 소형 스케치북(일명 크로키북) 하나를 꺼내더니.
맞은편 여성 한 분부터 초상화를 그려주기 시작했다.
소문이 나자 나도! 나도! 하면서 금새 신청자가 쇄도했다.
여성 몇 분을 먼저 그려준 다음 남자들 차례가 돌아왔고,
나랑 고재열 기자랑 몇 사람도 이날 특별한 선물을 받았다.
먼저 그릴 대상의 전체적인 윤곽을 파악한 후, 이제 본격적으로 슥슥 그려나가기 시작하는데, 어느새 김선주 주간의 그림이 다 됐네... 한번 보세요, 얼마나 잘 그렸는지.. 실물과 비교해보니 더 정확히 알 수 있겠죠?
한 사람 그리는 데 걸리는 시간은 한 20분 정도?
먼저 피사체의 윤곽을 파악한 후 종이에 구도를 잡아서 그려나갔다.
곁에서 보니 슥슥 그리는 것 같은데 한 이십분이 지나면 작품이 하나씩 탄생됐다.
박 화백이 선자리에서 이렇게 작업하는 장면은 내게 처음이 아니다.
지난 봄, 여름 ‘촛불집회’가 한창일 때 광화문 광장에서도 그랬다.
박 화백은 촛불집회에 참석한 시민들에게 현장에서 초상화를 그려주는 걸 봤다.
그 때 박 화백 주위로 사람들이 모여들었고, 더러 이 모습을 사진으로 찍기도 했다.

꼭 현재 모습보다는 상당히 젊게 그려 준다는 점이다.
내 초상화도 현재의 나보다는 20년은 젊어 보인다.
김선주 주간은 자신의 초상화를 보고 “40년은 젊어 보인다”고 농을 할 정도였다.
젊게 살라는 작가의 메시지가 담긴 것이 아닌가 싶다.
적어도 10여 명이 이날 박 화백의 초상화를 선물로 받았다. 고재열 기자를 그리고 있는 박재동 화백 이날 출판기념회의 주인공인 이충렬 씨를 서서 그리고 있다.
다들 기뻐했고, 소중하게 간직하겠노라고 했다.
나는 이 그림을 블로그 대문용으로 내걸 생각이다.
더러 금품이나 선행으로 적선(積善)을 하는데,
박재동 화백, 그는 그림으로 적선하는 사람이다.
저의 모습입니다. 대문용으로도 쓰렵니다.
